# Enable 2 Factor Authentication

> The server requires two-factor authentication on your Discord account. Here's how to turn it on.

This server only lets in accounts protected with two-factor authentication (2FA), because they're much harder to steal or farm.

## Turn on 2FA

**1. Open your account settings**

In Discord, click the gear next to your name to open **User Settings**, then go to **My Account**.

**2. Enable an authenticator app**

Under **Password and Authentication**, click **Enable Authenticator App** and follow the steps. You'll need an app such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy.

**3. Save your backup codes**

Discord offers backup codes in case you lose your phone. Keep them somewhere safe and never share them, not even with AuthenticateMe.

**4. Verify again**

Go back to the server and verify again. You may need a [new link](https://docsm.authenticateme.xyz/help/verification-errors/link-expired.md) if the old one expired.

Discord explains the process in its [two-factor authentication guide](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/219576828).
